Okay, you’ve probably heard the news by now if you follow our industry, but, pending regulatory approval, NetQoS is being acquired in a deal for $200M in cash, by CA Technologies.
I just got back from a company-wide meeting and lunch, and even though a lot of stuff went over my head, (I’ve never had a head for business,) what I do understand is that our stuff compliments their stuff, their stuff compliments our stuff, and the reason we’re being bought is because CA Technologies wants to maintain their position as the #1 IT management company. CA Technologies basically wants to use NetQoS technology and methodology to add critical visibility in application and service delivery to their portfolio of broad IT management tools.

Here’s a picture of Joel Trammell, NetQoS’s CEO and co-founder, and Roger Pilc, Sr. Vice President of Infrastructure Management at CA Technologies, at that meeting. Joel's on the left.

Michael Cote at Redmonk has an analysis of the deal, which probably gives the best reason why we’ve been so successful – and why CA Technologies is letting us do our own thing to continue to be successful.
“To call a 10 year old company a ‘startup’ is a bit silly, but they have come to that startup-like narrow focus that’s let them become good at the ‘one thing’ they do, network performance monitoring and diagnosis.”
I especially like this quote from Cote.
“NetQoS’ blogging program has always been a stand-out for me in the space as well. It’s hard to maintain attention around something as dull (to most folks) as network management, let alone find something to blog about, but they’ve done a good job over there.”
Thanks, Michael! (The trick is to insert pop culture reference links to YouTube whenever things get boring.)
We’re excited – Wily Technology was about our size when they were bought and have just about quadrupled their revenue since joining CA Technologies in 2006. We hope for stronger growth, mostly because we don’t have nearly the overhead they do in earthquake pills, dehydrated boulders, jet powered roller skates, and other assorted anti-RoadRunner paraphernalia.
