Also, a notice: As the end-of-the year and the Christmas holiday approach, Network Performance Daily will publish only on Wednesday and Friday in order to keep our subscribers e-mail boxes from filling up too quickly during holiday vacations. Please keep your RSS feeds and E-mail subscriptions active. We'll be back posting on a 5-day a week schedule on January 3rd. Comments may be posted at any time, and we welcome your suggestions for topics to cover in the new year.
More below the fold...
NPD: Techniques for Visibility in the Network
Imagine attempting to manage network performance across an enterprise without knowing who is using the network, when they are using the network, and without knowing if the routers and switches are running at their limits, or are failing intermittently. Utter chaos. So, how do you get visibility into your network?
Personally, I take a magnifying glass, some Cat-5 cable, and squint really hard.
Howto Forge: Setting up a PXE Install Server for Multiple Linux Distributions with Ubuntu Edgy Eft
This tutorial shows how to set up a PXE (short for preboot execution environment) install server with Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). A PXE install server allows your client computers to boot and install a Linux distribution over the network, without the need of burning Linux iso images onto a CD/DVD, boot floppy images, etc. This is handy if your client computers don't have CD or floppy drives, or if you want to set up multiple computers at the same time (e.g. in a large enterprise), or simply because you want to save the money for the CDs/DVDs.
No matter how tempting it may be, always ask permission before moving your entire enterprise to Linux.
Bob Sutor @ IBM: My Second Life
Like many people, I've been experimenting with Second Life, kicking the tires, so to speak. Though I first got an account in November, it's only been the last couple of weeks in which I've taken the time to go beyond the "wandering aimlessly, chatting with people, wondering what's up with the furry folk" stage.
Forget that. What's up with the weirdos at Reuters?
